THE V12 SPIDER RETURNS

The Ferrari 812 GTS marks the triumphant return of the legendary front-mounted V12 convertible after a 50-year hiatus since the introduction of the 1969 365 GTS4 “Daytona Spider”. This new drop-top was developed from the 812 Superfast with the goal of retaining the exhilarating feeling of speed and power delivered by the berlinetta version but with the added luxury and comfort of allowing occupants to bask in the unique soundtrack of the naturally-aspirated V12. The Ferrari engineers accomplished this feat by integrating a retractable hardtop, which does not impinge upon the interior dimensions, thus maintaining the donor car’s roomy cockpit.

A Closer Look Into The 812 GTS

  • Interior

The light, elegant, lean interior design introduced in the 812 Superfast also reappears in the 812 GTS with deliberately layered and broken up surfaces to create voids which make the main elements seem as though they are floating . The overall effect is of both thoroughbred racing eagerness and elegance. As always, the main focus is the steering wheel and commands. Satellite pods on either side of the wheel interplay with contrasting materials to create an extreme cockpit in which all of the various elements are angled towards the all-important pilot.
  • Exterior

The 812 GTS is a spider variant based on the 812 Superfast and as such it takes its overall design the berlinetta version. This means that most of the innovative features debuted on the 812 Superfast have remained. The one notable deviation is the re-designed rear section which is highlighted by two buttresses; these unique design elements were designed to visually embody a sense of forward thrust and lend a signature look that would set the spider apart from the berlinetta. That said, the car hails a new way of driving and enjoying that V12 to the fullest: en plein air! The new 812 GTS also features a new, highly sculptural multi-spoke forged wheel which will be offered in three finishes and is exclusive to this model.
  • Powertrain

812 GTS borrows the power unit from the 812 Superfast to produce an impresive 800 cv at 8500 rpm. As on the 812 Superfast, these performance levels were achieved in part by optimzations to the engine design and innovations, such as a 350 bar direct injection system, and the control system for the variable geometry inlet tracts, developed on naturally-aspirated F1 engines. These systems allowed the displacement to be increased from 6.2 to 6.5 litres so as to maximise power output whilst retaining excellent pick-up even at low revse To best manage the emense power produced by this thundering V12, particular attentions was paid to calibrating the Manettino. The result is a sensation of extreme power whilst maintaining the ability to easily and confidently dose the massive available torque for smooth, progressive power delivery at all engine speeds To produce a refined and full-bodied sound in the cabin during all kinds of driving, the exhast system was modified and meticulously optimized throught the entire system. This is particularly appreciable when the roof is open!
